FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

LAST UPDATED: December 4th, 2014 | From revisions began: Sept 27 2009
FAQ revisions are/have been proposed to community by mods for community approval.
(Original F.A.Q - pre 09/27/09 - found here)

Feel free to ask any questions you have on this page, as well.

(See also RULES & the IN-DEPTH GUIDES to the PCD, The World of Adstringendum, and In-Game Death.)

GENERAL QUESTIONS

What does "Adstringéndum" mean?
It means "compression" in Latin. This is because the game's premise is a result of a scientific experiment in space-time compression…in other words, the first Scientist group have plucked you all from your times and places and shoved you all in one city. Unintentionally, of course.

Who are the moderators of the game?
The current moderators of the game are Ami, Ashlee, and Manda. We work together, along with our helpstaff, to keep this game running as smoothly as possible.

RESERVES & TAKEN CHARACTERS

Is there a way for me to reserve a character?
Yes! You can RESERVE any character you wish to play that is NOT on the TAKEN LIST and not already RESERVED. Please note you can only reserve one character at a time. Once a character is reserved, no one but the reserver may app the character until the reserve expires in one week.

The character I want to play is on the TAKEN LIST. Now what?
Well, we encourage you to join with another character! And if the character you wanted drops at a later date, you're more than welcome to pick them up.

APPLICABLE CHARACTERS

Book/Movie/TV show 'X' just came out! Can I apply for character 'Y' right away?
No, characters can be apped no sooner than a month after the canon has been released. However, if the canon is established, you can app a character from a more recent canonpoint. (For example, you can app from a show's season finale right after it airs, but not from a show's pilot or a movie right after it comes out.) If you have any questions on this, please feel free to contact a mod and we'll figure out if this rule applies!

Can I apply for more than one character from the same series?
Yes! Provided that:

  • The characters you all want to play are not too closely related (in terms of potential/canonical reasons for interaction).
  • There are at least four other players from that series already.
    • This is done to avoid what is known as "playercest," a person playing their own characters off of each other. The first clause prevents a single player from applying for and playing (for example) both Bert and Ernie of Sesame Street, or Luke and Darth Vader from Star Wars. The second clause eliminates same-canon interaction overlap.

Can I apply for a duplicate of a character?
No, we're not taking duplicates.

What if they're a duplicate from another series?
This does happen. Clamp, for example, has its crossover series Tsubasa. You can apply for that duplicate only if they have a different history and story-line than the first. For example - we have had two Kamui's, but one was from X and one from Tsubasa. They were different enough to be considered two different characters. However, Leon from Kingdom Hearts and Squall from Final Fantasy VIII would not both be permitted, since they are so canonically the same. If you have any questions, feel free to email the mods.

Does my character have to be human?
No, they do not, but they do have to have some way of using the PCD. If they do not speak English, their PCD can translate for them.

What if I want to app a spirit or a ghost? Would that be the same as an Animus?
If you want to apply as a spirit being, you are more than welcome to. However, they will be visible to other characters. For example, Bleach Shinigami in this game still can do what they do, but they are solid forms. It would not be the same as an Animus, who are spirit beings but from a separate dimension. They hold a lot of power over events in the game and we would like to keep them separate from other spiritual beings, too.

I want to apply with an Original Character as my first muse. Can I do this?
Yes, we have decided to allow original characters to be apped without having played a canon character in game before.

Can I apply with a character that has been at another roleplaying game previously and retain their memories and history from that game?
Yes, we are now accepting CRAU characters with some limitations. Please read the rules as well as the notes for CRAU applications on the applications page.

Can I apply for an original character from an established world?
Right now we are not accepting canon OCs.

APPLICATIONS
[see also RULES section under APPLICATIONS].

I see some really long applications. Do I need to have five comments worth to get in?
No, you don't. You will also see we approve some shorter applications. What is most important is that you show that you understand the character and can write well. Being wordy or not is more of a stylistic thing, though longer applications do tend to have more info.

Can I just link to a wikipedia background page?
Yes. However, if there is no wiki page, it will be necessary for you to write a short background that covers the most major events that your character was involved in. This doesn't need to be longer than a few paragraphs.

Can I write a background even if my character has a wiki page?
Sure! If you like writing backgrounds or even just think the wiki one isn't good enough, you are welcome to write your own. It's just not necessary for all applications.

I think the mods missed my app...
THEN WE ARE SORRY DX Please send us a PM, email, or comment! But remember, if there's a whole bunch of apps around yours then we have not yet checked those either. We try not to overlook any so please let us know. If there's an issue with your application specifically, we will do our best to contact you.

How often do you go over applications?
We go over applications on the first and third weekends of the month. Please note that this is a new system for us and make have a few bugs to work out, but if it's been more than a few days after the weekend your app should've been reviewed, please feel free to send us a message to check in!

ACTIVITY AND ACTIVITY CHECKS
[see also RULES section of ACTIVITY & HIATUSES for more information]

When do you do activity checks?
Once a month, on the last week of the each month. For example, the activity check reminded for June is most likely to be posted around June 23rd. The AC post will be checked and PMs sent out on July 1st. Those who received AC PMs then have a week to reply to avoid being dropped from the game.

What happens if I know I can't make activity check?
Just let us know before the AC period ends and make it up the following month by submitting three proofs instead of the regular two.

What if I miss AC/forget to tell you guys that I can't make it?
A PM will be sent to the character journal to notify you of such. You will then have one (1) week to reply to the AC post with proofs of activity and PM the mod team back notifying us of such. If you do not, your character will be considered inactive and dropped, and you will have to wait two weeks in order to reapply and bring that character back to Adstringéndum. It's "character squatting" (that is, just holding onto a character without doing anything with him/her) to keep a character that you do not play enough to pass the Activity Check... So please remember to update!

What if I'm on hiatus and miss an activity check/my second post for that month?
If you're going on a hiatus, let us know! Post in the Hiatus Post, link us to that post in your character's AC thread and we'll take note of it. If you're on hiatus for more than two weeks, you will be exempt from one activity check. Do not post to the OOC comm (only hiatuses logged to the Hiatus Post will count towards activity checks!).

What if I'm on hiatus for more than one month?
We ask that your hiatuses don't last more than one month for a fandom character, or two for an original character, if it's possible to control. Being inactive for a few months and holding onto that character isn't fair to the people that interact with them and others who would like to app them. But, we know that some things in real life are just uncontrollable. Please do your best to check in and let us know by email if you need an extension. These will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Eventually, being on a continuous hiatus will mean forfeiting your character. It's not that we want to be mean, but if you're not around to role-play, there's no sense in having the character. You're welcome to apply again if/when you're able to come back.

What’s this I hear about a mandatory HMD?
Every three months (for the ACs covering March, June, September, and December) we’ll post a comm-locked post where you can post a header comment with your characters or you can link to a personal HMD on your character’s account and we’ll freeze the comment to direct HMD comments there. You must include a link to your comment on the HMD in order to make AC for these four months. We’ll give everyone a couple weeks to post in. ANY FORM OF HARASSMENT ON THE HMD WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. We reserve the right to swing the banhammer if we see this happening.

What happens if I don’t post to the HMD?
First offense, you’ll be making up AC for all of your characters for the following month. HMD is part of the Activity Check when it comes around, and not doing it is not meeting all the requirements. Hence the term mandatory. Second offense is an AC make-up and a strike on your record. I know it seems harsh to level a strike for missing HMD, but if the punishment every time is just making up AC for missing HMD, some people might not do it at all, making a mandatory HMD pointless. Third offense is your third strike, you’ll be out of the game.

WORLD QUESTIONS

How does my character get here?
Because of the scientists' error, individuals, things, and places are being drawn into a place known as Adstringendum. When your character arrives, they’ll be in a small, ruined city surrounded by an expansive cave system, a very rocky beach, cliffs, wild and dangerous wastelands, and a vast ocean.

How does my character communicate with everyone else?
Upon arriving in the world, your character will have a PCD (Personal Communication Device). They may find it near them, mysteriously placed in their belongings, or even handed one by a complete stranger. The network is the primary way of communicating with everyone. For more information, please see the IN-DEPTH PCD GUIDE

What kind of effects does Adstringendum have on my character?
The city itself, aside from events, has one major effect on most of the people in it - they do not age. At all. For the few not affected as much, aging is slower and will eventually stop. Hair and nails still grow; cells die, but they are replaced perfectly. Children will perpetually look like children, and elders will not die of old age. Wounds will heal at the normal rate for the character.

What are the areas of the world called?
The world is divided into two main zones. The Safezone is an area about four miles across, surrounded on one side by an ocean and the second main zone: the Wastelands. The Safezone seems to have originally been a city, but it’s in a state of disrepair. The Wastelands are wild, unstable, and dangerous.
For more information on these areas, please see the IN-DEPTH WORLD GUIDE

Who are the "Animus"? What do they do?
The Animus are spirits, essentially, and the word means "spirit" in Latin. They're ethereal beings that exist in a spirit world. As their world was compressed along with other physical realities, they became stuck in the makeup, unable to take form or truly interact with the environment as they normally would.

So, they are quite cranky. They will take advantage of you if you're in an out of body, spirit form (such as when you die, not like Shinigami and whatnot). And since they cannot interact with the world itself, they take out their anger on the people. If they work hard enough, they can take away your voice, or change your genetic make-up for a period of time. It really depends on how they feel like showing their disdain. The Project constantly tries to see if there is a way to stop them from involving themselves, but so far nothing has worked - and only angered them further.

As of the shift that took place in August 2014, the Animus seem to have disappeared… But they may or may not be as gone as they seem.

So, is there like, a big organization in charge of everything?
Not exactly, no. However, that doesn't mean one can't develop. The Unified Universe Project (the first group of scientists) was just doing what it could to make up for causing everything to become screwed up in the first place. However, they were caught in an explosion during a conflict with a new group of scientists. Feel free to have your characters create their own organizations, and don't hesitate to message the mods with ideas and plots involving NPC characters!

Is there a way out?
So far, no. People do come and go from time to time, but it's never purposeful and while some return after a time and remember their experiences in Adstringendum, more do not. There have been a few in-character attempts at escape, but none have been successful. Feel free to message the mods about any potential escape plots you would like to do with your character.

POWERS

What about my powers? Can I use them here?
Yes, you can, with some limitations, of course. There may be fluctuations in that ability due to the very nature of the dimension, but in general you may. The mods will announce when powers are suddenly unattainable or enhanced, etc. But because you have your powers, we ask you to BE RESPONSIBLE with them. Don't go blowing up the place, please! If you want to cause massive damage, clear it with the mods via an email to the mod account.

Sweet! I can use my powers, so now I can pwn everyone!
No, not necessarily :/ You can use your powers, but anything that has to do with altering time won't work here. The world involves time getting squished, after all. Traveling through space is also a bit of a problem as well, so characters' teleportation abilities won't work in Adstringendum either. As for claiming "my character is way stronger than yours" because they're from another series and have strong abilities... well, that will happen, but there are consequences for using a lot of power. The Safezone is the most stable area, but the place as a whole is still being held together with the equivalent of space duct tape. Going Super Saiyan gazillion will probably not only piss off the Animus and have them knock you into a pond of goo or something, but it may also cause a rip in space-time.

So yes, you do have your abilities, but it is advised not to use them all to their limits. And if someone says “that's okay, my low power can kill you,” while in some cases that may be true (like if Aizen from Bleach wanted to blow up Card Captor Sakura), we ask you to be nice to other players. You cannot control things that happen to someone else's character, so if you want to fight them without your full power for whatever reason, go ahead as long as you and the other player have discussed things. Just don't blow up the world. For character death, see below.

Furthermore, if your abilities require another unique character (such as Naruto-series' summon creatures--Pakkun, Gambunta, Manda, etc), chances are you will not have that ability here if the character is not present and applied for. You can't pull your friends across space-time, after all!

DEATH
[see also IN-DEPTH CHARACTER DEATH GUIDE]

What happens if I die here?
Since the spirit world has been compressed with the "real" world as well, you will return here, but your soul will enter your body as it is upon your death, so you may be in a lot of pain when you come back. If you were blown to pieces, those pieces will come back together. It has been revealed that the Animus are responsible for this, as they don't like people coming into their spiritual state and so they will take something away from you while you're in your spirit form, be it a possession, memory, or ability. You can be dead for the period of time you want for your character, be it an hour to a week or more, but you will eventually have to come back. Any possessions your character arrived with will remain in the city, and your character's body will remain exactly as it was upon death until the character is revived, and will not decompose.

As of the world shift in August 2014, it’s unknown exactly how return from death works. However, OOCly the process is still the same regarding prices.

Do I need permission for Character Death?
All character deaths must be approved by a moderator at least 48 hours in advance. This is more for records purposes and to be sure that death is not used too flippantly (or frequently, in some cases), and not because we want to moderate your creativity on death. If you have a plan to kill off your character, please contact us (either by email or PM) with the following information:

RESETS, CANON UPDATES & DROPS

What is a character reset/update and how do I do it?
A character reset is what it sounds like; the character is being reset and returns to Adstringendum without any memories of their previous time. We understand there are times when a character may need to be reset for a variety of reasons, ranging from needing to update to a further point in their canon, to realizing the character has gone OOC and needs a fresh start, and we allow character resets to help with these situations. Don't abuse the privilege, however, and do not use it as a crutch to get out of OOC situations. Try to remain IC instead.

A canon update is when a character disappears for a short time (a minimum of a week) and 'updates' to a later canon point. They will return to the game in whatever state they are in at that new canon point, and will not have remembered Adstringendum while in their world. However, they will regain their memories instantly upon their return unless they have been gone for far longer than a week in game time. Please contact a mod for more info if your character will be gone for their update for more than a few weeks. An updated character will also have to pay a 'price' like the ones paid upon death, but far more minor.

To reset or update a character, take the following steps:
  1. Email or PM the moderators to request permission for the reset or update. Provide the following information:

    RESET

    UPDATE

We may take about 48 hrs to get back to you on this.

  2. If a reset or update is approved, the character disappears from Adstringendum for a minimum of one week and the character cannot be played during that time (any backlogging aside). We place this time limit in order to allow you the player to refresh your canon and work out how your reset character would be played. Also, this time allows the characters in-game to in-characterly realize someone has disappeared and react as needed. If for any reason you need a character to disappear for a shorter period of time, we can discuss it, but a week is the standard.

  3. When a RESET character returns, they will have no memories of their prior time in Adstringendum. It will be a fresh start for them, as if they were new arrivals to the city.

  4. As of May 2012, when an UPDATED character returns, they will retain memories of their prior time in Adstringendum.

  5. Death prices remain even after characters are reset/updated. Resets are not a way to get around character deaths. While they do not have to begin with the price lost (if they lost a memory of someone, they can return with those memories intact), that price will be repaid over time (slowly lose their memory of that person). This is a process that takes no longer than a month.

  6. A character can only be RESET or UPDATED once every six months.

If you have any other questions, please contact us.

Are there penalties for Drops or Resets?
RP is about encouraging interaction and the building of character relationships. As such, serial applying and dropping, or serial resetting, is discouraged. We know that some characters just don't work out, or things need to be fixed, but resetting/dropping too often handicaps characters' current/potential Character Relationships. Just be careful how often you do it, as sometimes this will have to be factored into an application review, or consideration of a reset.

EVENTS

Do I have to participate in events?
Generally, no. We like to give you the option of opting in or out of any given event. When the event is set for the month, you'll be able to tell if it's something everyone will be affected by, or if it's something you can avoid. In a gender-bender event, for example, you can chose whether or to afflict your character(s) with the condition. In the event of an earthquake, your character will undoubtedly feel the rumble, but it is your choice as to whether or not they respond to it or are affected further. If you have questions about a specific event, feel free to ask on the event's description post.

How are events made/chosen? Do we get any say?
Generally, the mods select timely events and arrange them in the calendar posted just before the start of a new month. And we do accept suggestions for events! In fact, we occasionally (it's a big task, so it may not happen every month) offer up a poll of events suggested by you, the players, for the community to vote on for occurrence in-game. We do ask that if you suggest events, you are reasonable. After all, we do have to somehow make this work in-game for everyone involved. But they can be big events (changing the very landscape of the city) or small events (no shoes allowed). Anything goes.

Can I have a player-based event?
If you wish to have a player-made event that would greatly affect the game in some way, please be sure to clear it via the moderators first. A minimum of two weeks should be given to the moderators to allow for their questions and the questions of the community as a whole.

CHARACTER QUESTIONS

Can my character get paired off with someone?
Only if both you and the other player consent to it! Obviously, you can have a one-sided love, but you are not permitted to force a pairing on another player.

Can my character get pregnant?
While we realize some players may want their characters to have children or become pregnant, we do not allow characters to have pregnancies come to term. Due to the compression of planes, there's no way for the child to gain a new soul, and so it cannot be born alive. (This is also for practical reasons -- infants are individual characters of their own who impose major burdens on their caretakers, won't be able to speak or use the network for years, and present issues with caring for them if the parent characters should drop.)

If you are set on a plot where your character becomes pregnant but ultimately does not give birth for one reason or another, you must contact a moderator with a detailed plan of what will happen. You must provide the following information: characters involved, how this will impact your character, how this will impact other characters closely related to yours, the reason you want to do this plot, what will happen during each month, the end result, and impact on your character. We realize this may be a lot of information, but this is a plot that should be taken seriously and not made up on the fly.

For something small like a pregnancy scare or any other false alarms, no mod approval or notice is required.

Under no circumstances can males become pregnant.

Oh Adstring, your magnetic pull is so strong...

Question! Would this here vidya game character based on a hilarious bastardization of a Japanese historical persona (http://adstrngndummod.livejournal.com/11026.html) count as a Real Person for apping purposes?

[identity profile] adstrngndummod.livejournal.com 2010-12-02 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Your link, it is to the FAQ page, I don't think that's quite appable. ♥

Is the Japanese historical persona like the one you had before?

1. I think I heard somewhere before that the languages are translated by default so people can understand each other. However, what if someone prefers the language not to be translated? Is it possible to do that?

2. I was thinking of persuading someone to play Yukari Yakumo of the Touhou project, and her ability, apparently, is to be able to manipulate borders, which kinda makes all the power limitations a bit confusing. Is it possible for her to keep her powers, but at the same time she doesn't use it against the Animus or get out of Adstring because a) she's lazy and b) she's interested with whatever the Animus are planning?

3. Bonus lol question: What are the chances of being able to play the One Ring an inanimate object? XD

[identity profile] adstrngndummod.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry for taking a few days to get back to you!

1) Languages are translated automatically, unless the characters deliberately choose to not be translated. So yes, they can choose to only be heard in their original language, but it wouldn't happen by accident.

2) Yukari would be app-able, though her boundary abilities would be limited to what's actively known about them in canon, and couldn't work to access the Animus (also player permission for boundary-hopping would be necessary when applicable). Also, the Animus frown on too many space-influencing shenanigans, so boundary-manipulation might not always work perfectly (though at the player's discretion).

3) Unfortunately not, inanimate objects have a hard time pressing the buttons on the PCDs. ♥

...I'm not even in the game again yet and already I'm spamming the FAQ page, what.

So, uh. Me again. Different subject from last time. About apping an OC - would I have to re-app a canon chara beforehand again, or can I attempt an OC straight off the bat since I've played here for a few months before I dropped?

orz. It's totes cool if I need to go the long way, but I'm just curious.

[identity profile] adstrngndummod.livejournal.com 2010-12-13 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
No problems about spamming, and I'm sorry for a response taking so long!

Unfortunately, at this time a canon character would still be required before apping an OC.

[identity profile] unioneitalia.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I beg your pardon but I'd like to ask something.
I'm wondering if there's a possibility the community would accept a Nyotalia character. (What Nyotalia is? It's about the characters of Hetalia, only genderbent. Himaruya, the creator, started it... and some of them even have a slight personality development. It's canon, somehow, and almost all main characters have an official 'nyotalia' character...)

Actually they don't have a real part in the official story, leaving to their 'counterparts' the whole scene, but there are small comics with them and official images too.
I'd base my character only on the few suggestions himaruya gave (Is this your problem? I'll punch it away!) and on italian history and tradictions (mostly based on what Italy was in 1861 [There would be what you'd call oocness maybe because she'd love 'Polenta' and not 'pasta' (What a stupid sample. Anyway pasta with Pomodoro was invented only in 1800... and it wasn't so welcomed at first.), she'd be quiter and more shy than 'Feliciano' A woman, in 1861, wouldn't certainly being allowed to run around naked and that kind of things...
...
So., okay, I'm bothering you. The final question is: there's a small chance I could try to apply for a Nyotalia North Italy instead of his male counterpart?

[identity profile] adstrngndummod.livejournal.com 2010-12-13 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, the character at this time doesn't have enough canon on her own to really stand on her own. While she's a different character than her male version, not enough has been specifically given of her yet to be appable.

[identity profile] greatscholar.livejournal.com 2010-12-14 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry if this is a question that has already been answered elsewhere and I might've missed it, but is there an age limit to how young characters have to be to be applied for here?

[identity profile] adstrngndummod.livejournal.com 2010-12-15 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
There isn't an official one, no. It just depends on the capacity or maturity of the character - as someone who's too young wouldn't be app-able because they haven't lived long enough to show much personality or have a real background. But children are can generally be applied for, yes, assuming they have those things.

[identity profile] lastdragonlord.livejournal.com 2011-01-09 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
Can a character death be the catalyst for a canon update?

What I mean is, can a character be killed in the game, and when they come back, be from a different point in their canon (including the memory fog assigned to a typical canon update in this fashion, of course)?

And if it can, would a certain or certain memories of Ads never being gained back be considered a due? Or would there be an additional sacrifice, on top of the fractured memories?

[identity profile] adstrngndummod.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so sorry - for some reason I thought you'd gotten an answer elsewhere already, so responding here would've been superfluous!

But yes, a character can be killed, and come back as a 'reset'. They'd still need a death penalty other than memory loss, though, since a reset character shouldn't be able to regain all memory of their previous time in the city. A reset can't be used to escape a death sacrifice.

Again, I'm really, really sorry about the delay.

[identity profile] nopeskyfish.livejournal.com 2011-01-10 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Got a quick question (or two), and hoping that it hasn't already been answered and I just missed it when I was looking.

1. What about a character who's just died in canon? The spot I'm looking at to take Jack from, that's the case. Would that be alright, or do I need to nudge him up a bit, to maybe just before he 'died', or maybe a case of 'he thought he was dead, but not really'? Just trying to make sure.

2. The point I'm looking at taking him from is also a little odd. It's an AU that exists within the canon of the show, kind of. Season 4, Episode 16, an episode set ten years in the future of the show's timeline, where Jack and the other characters are attempting to change the past to prevent their reality from happening. Is this- alright? Or do I need to pick another place in the timeline to take him from?

[identity profile] adstrngndummod.livejournal.com 2011-01-13 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
For the first question, that's no problem! He can be taken from after death, certainly.

And for the second, that's also fine! As long as the AU exists within the canon of the series, it can be used as a pull point.

[identity profile] ahandsomedevil.livejournal.com 2011-01-22 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
Sooo I'm preparing Jonah's app, but I was wondering:

1) If he's accepted, he'll be running a tabloid/newspaper thing. Without paper he'll obviously have to use the network. Just wanted to make sure that was ok? It could even function as a sort of (very biased) recap of events in the game.

2) If that is ok, can he have anonymous NPC's in his employ? That'd explain how he gets pictures and information, since he can't do it on his own.

1) Of course, using the network is fine!

2) Maybe, if it was fairly limited? It'd be better if he could find PCs to fill those positions, though, but if he needs people to help 'start up', that's okay.

I have a question, regarding canon updating. I didn't see it among the other comments, but it could be right in front of me and I'm being a derp.

So, I would like to canon update Belphegor, would that be a problem? If it isn't and I can, could I have him leave on the 25th, and come back after several days (whichever is a good enough amount of time).

If it is a problem, I'm sorry for wasting your time with these silly questions. ♥

[identity profile] adstrngndummod.livejournal.com 2011-01-23 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It's actually on this page under "Resets & Drops", but since 'canon updating' is the more used name, the title should probably be changed. :D;

But yes, an update would probably be fine! We'd just have to ask for any details that would change in the update (basically if there'd be new powers/abilities that would need to be noted). But an 'updated' character would lose their current memories of Adstring, and arrive as though they were new - though they could regain parts of their old memories over time.

[identity profile] mirroredecho.livejournal.com 2011-02-09 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure nothing like this is covered anywhere, but if it is, just point me in that direction.

My question is: Cloud has been training out in the wastelands with Uki. With everything currently going on his life, this probably isn't the best of ideas. So what me and Rose were planning, was to have Uki injure him in some way (Attack him and catch him off guard accidentally.) that would either cause him trauma, or to hit his head, and would the cause him to suffer from amnesia.

It would only be for a week or two, but since there's no death involved, I thought it was best to ask and make sure it would be something that we can go ahead and do.

[identity profile] adstrngndummod.livejournal.com 2011-02-10 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Something like that is okay! Since it's not death, and is temporary anyway, there's no problem with just going ahead with it. ♥

Hey, mods, Naoko again! I was thinking about apping this girl here come March, but in the spirit of forward planning, would she be able to bring two Pokemon along, or does that only apply to characters who were in Adstring this past Christmas?

[identity profile] adstrngndummod.livejournal.com 2011-02-11 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, sure, that would be okay. <3 Since the other trainers have two now, the Animus can be more generous.

Hello hello, mods! Potential apper here, with a question regarding injuries and regeneration.

1) Kanda's regeneration has possibly deteriorated slightly from the canon point I'm taking from. will it kept as is, taken away, bumped back to regular speed, etc?

2) From the canon point I'm taking him from, he's skin/flesh is also littered with.. cracks. Nothing too serious that can't survive a fall from more than 20 feet, but still cracks. Will these be healed up upon arrival or will he have to find ways to fix it, whether on his own or with the help of someone else?

[identity profile] adstrngndummod.livejournal.com 2011-02-22 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
In both cases, he would arrive in the condition he was just in - with both those conditions, if that's what he has at the time. But if he can find some way of healing once he's here, that's fine.

Regarding character canon, I'm applying for Liara T'soni from Mass Effect. While her personality and canon are very well-established, her relationship with a "Canon-OC" creates some issues in writing her backstory:

1. Liara is an optional romance interest for Commander Shepard in the game. There is absolutely no established canon on whether or not Liara and Shepard are romantic. Am I free to take my choice as to whether or not they had a relationship?

2. While a lot of things are pretty consistent about Shepard from player to player, one thing in particular that can cause an issue is Shepard's sex: he/she can be either male or female. Established canon calls Shepard male, however, when referring to him/her in the books. Do I need to stick with that established canon or can I play Liara as having known a fem-shep?

Mostly, I just want to play Liara as taken from the specific storyline that I played, which involves a romantic relationship with a female Shepard. (I'm so used to seeing Shepard as a female from playing, and hearing Jennifer Hale's voice in the part, that I have a hard time thinking of Shepard as a male despite the established canon.) This really won't affect anything except for the backstory on my app, but I just need to know what to write there.

[identity profile] shadauxbroker.livejournal.com 2011-03-15 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Also, another question... Liara has what's called an "Omni-tool." If you're unfamiliar with Mass Effect, the Omni-tool is pretty much what it sounds like: it does about everything. It's used for information analysis, "extranet" access, fabricating grenades and tech mines, first aid, repair, hacking, decryption, and pretty much anything else that has to do with technology. They contain a computer microframe, sensor analysis pack, and minifacturing fabricator.

Given that Liara is a scientist who used to specialize in Prothean technology, would it be alright if I had her reverse-engineer her PCD and modify her omni-tool to access the network, or somehow otherwise integrated her PCD's hardware into the omni-tool's holographic interface?

I've noticed on the Fauna page that Adstring has Firelizards. Would it be possible for a character to Impress one?

Question! I was just about to finish up my application for Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series, but I've hit a snag. Given the canon point I'm taking her from, she would not have her wand on her person. If anything, she may have another witch's wand on her, but it hasn't been formally given to her, as she's unconscious by this point (the escape from Malfoy Manor). Is she then wand-less for the duration of her stay in Adstringendum, or does she have her own wand tucked away in a pocket, or will it be found somewhere? Letting her have her wand would be easiest, but I can cope with not letting her have one or having someone else's.

My apologies if this was answered elsewhere, but I've checked a few places and couldn't find anything pertaining to this sort of thing specifically.

[identity profile] adstrngndummod.livejournal.com 2011-05-19 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Characters can only bring with them what they have on them at the time, so Hermione should show up with the other's wand, if that's what she has with her.

Since it's an important thing to her character though, she could find it in the city after she's arrived!

So yes, if with small delay! :D; It's up to you how/when she finds it.

I'm interested in apping this guy right here, but I would like to ask a question of you mods first.

Sam here is from early season six and soul less, so there is a drastic difference in his personality. What I want to know is if you would like me to include his personality from before losing his soul too? Or could I just incorporate that into his history?

[identity profile] adstrngndummod.livejournal.com 2011-05-21 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
It should probably be mentioned briefly in the personality section as well- not in any detail, but just to contrast with his 'current' personality? But most of that could go in history, yeah.

That's right, it's so long I have to break it into two parts.

I've got a few questions~ I'm considering apping Priss Asagiri from Bubblegum Crisis. I played her on another multiverse game years ago and I rather miss her.

1) Canon/s:

There are actually two Bubblegum Crisis animes. One, BGC 2032, is from the 80s. The other, 2040, is from the late 90s. 2040 is a remake of 2032 but... doesn't use 2032's plot. If I write up her background to include both canons, could I play a Priss that's from 2032 and 2040? I figured out a way to do it when I played her else-game in the past, and would write up a detailed timeline to include both in my app. It seems to me that it'd fit in with the "compression" theme if it's allowed. I mostly just treat 2032 as happening before 2040, and use 2040 (which has a complete over-arching plot, whereas 2032 didn't) when there's un-meshable conflicts.

But I don't want to even go there if the idea itself isn't allowed!

2) Passenger:

If I take Priss from the end of 2040, she's had another being downloaded into her mind: Galatea. Galatea is the source of the Boomers (http://burning-highway.livejournal.com/4154.html), so this ends up really screwing with Priss' head. Cue lots of crazy. Cue possibly learning the correct frequencies with which to manipulate machines. Cue that being your guys' call whether I take her pre download or post, and if post, whether Priss ever manifests the Sotai Phenomenon or not (the machines/metal foolery). When I wrote her going the full nine yards on an old game, it took several years before it stopped being little things that happened on accident, and by that point I had it start breaking down her biological tissues, forcing her to rarely use it. See: end of question 3 for further complications.

( Even without the Phenomenon it would be interesting to have Galatea along, for sheer slow-cooked identity crisis value. )

Re: That's right, it's so long I have to break it into two parts.

[identity profile] burning-highway.livejournal.com 2011-06-03 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
3) Weapon:

The hardsuit by the end of 2040 is... pretty broken. Kind of melted, really. But since the final hardsuit can turn into a goop-like substance and re-form into a full suit, I don't necessarily see this as a deal-breaker for it being functional. If she shows up with it (maybe even in it?) in its melty state, could she repair it? I could see her muddling her way through this without Galatea, very slowly, or muddling her way through it with Galatea a little less slowly but hampered by frequent "OMG why do I know this shit?!" meltdowns.

The energy source for the final suit (which can apparently run for days) isn't really explained, but I assume it's some kind of electricity. As I understand it, this would just mean hooking it up somewhere with a stable grid? Thankfully the inner-metal (what the goo is called) version would probably only need this once or twice a week. I can come up with a more solid number after I do my canon-review, but the final suit's final charge saw it through quite a chunk of time.

I could come up with a more extensive list of things it can do if/when I write the app, but the final hardsuit isn't much larger than Priss herself, though it's so heavy that when it isn't powered up that she can't move inside it at all, even out in space. It has various guns, which I read there wouldn't be any fresh ammunition for. It also IIRC has a rail gun, which I could see Priss managing to reload with scrap metal? But up to you guys. The knuckle-bombs I suspect would be a lost cause, which I'm fine with. It's main advantages in this setting would be the stupid levels of brute strength coupled with enough durability that, despite not being built for space, it still performed pretty well up on a satellite at the end of 2040 and it managed to get Priss back down to earth without her dying, though re-entering the atmosphere did a number on it.

It has thrusters to assist with really high/far jumping, but no actual flight. And it's limited by needing to recharge periodically, its insane weight, and the fact that without ranged weaponry or bombs, Priss would be reduced to punching things to death. Which she's really fine with, as that's exactly her style anyway. But it still means she has to get in melee range, and while the suit is stupid-fast when momentum is on its side and still really fast with the assistance of a thruster, the suit can still be restrained/pinned/trapped. Sure, it can throw bulldozer, but it ain't doing jack shit if it can't get any leverage / grip / etc.

It should be noted that the hardsuit is, in fact, a Boomer. But since it uses Priss as its core, it's not a sentient one.

If the Phenomenon (see question 2) is allowed, or only partly allowed, the hardsuit would be the perfect transmitter for it. It's already a machine that's connected to Priss' brain.

...Hahahaha, this is a page and a half. I'm so sorry. XD Hopefully my insanely-detailed questions/explanations is a sign that I know my canon(s), at least? :33

I can take her just from 2040 and have her fend off killer rabbits with her handy dandy Always Nearby Metal Pipe (tm) if need be, but I'll freely admit that the gritty, grimy, in-your-face cyberpunk aspect of the canon is part of why I like this character, so lemme know. <3

You say you don't accept linked applications. If a personality section is extraordinarily long but the rest of the app isn't, can that be linked externally within the body of the application? So hosted elsewhere, like on a gdoc or an LJ entry, but the application itself posted as a proper comment thread the way it's supposed to be.

[identity profile] adstrngndummod.livejournal.com 2011-06-10 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, the entire thing has to be posted, if you want to post it. D: How long is extraordinarily long? Personality is the most important section, but there's no need for an app to be 15+ comments long or anything.

But, we do accept emailed applications, as long as you post to the application page that it's been emailed (so there's a public record of its existence!). Would that work better?

(Asking for future reference!)

Is there any general rule, stated or implied, regarding new source materials & spoilers for characters? Specifically, I've been seriously considering writing Jon Snow from A Song of Ice & Fire. However, I'd like to first see how A Dance of Dragons furthers the story and Jon as a character, since I would either apply for him as he is at the conclusion of book 3/middle of book 4, OR at some point determined by book 5.

Book 5 is to be released on July 12th. I'm a fast reader and already know it'll only be two or three days at most before I'm done with it. Buuut I just want to make sure beforehand that it's okay using new material that's only a couple of days old that may carry with it sizable spoilers for character development and/or plot.

(And even if someone else reserves/apps him before 7/12, I'm still interested in the answer!)

[identity profile] adstrngndummod.livejournal.com 2011-06-14 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, as long as the source material exists, it's free to use. :D There's no waiting period or anything on new things, as long as it's been released.

Hello, was interested in Adstring after some of my friends bugged me about apping. :P

Question is, after reading the rules/FAQ, I was wondering if you would consider Top Man from the Mega Man series to be a character with sufficient canon to app, or if he would be considered one of those quasi-OCs. I can see it either way, but I wanted to ask before writing up a whole app that misses the mark.

Thanks in advance! :D

[identity profile] plays-it-loud.livejournal.com 2011-06-24 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yo. *points up at Top Man there* If he apps, no matter the character, I'm coming too. :D Forte here is my most likely candidate, and he has gobs of canon so I'm not worried about that, but I did have a few other questions on him as a potential character!

-From reading through the FAQ and questions of others, I see you've been letting characters arrive with important pets/animal companions. Am I correct in thinking this would include Forte's robot dog? (They're a team unit, and Gospel is required for Forte to use some of his abilities. He doesn't talk and acts much like a real dog/wolf would.)

-The series is a little vague on some of its specifics concerning its robots. In short, the fandom winds up making up a lot of stuff, some of which has actually become canon, so the line between canon and fanon can be pretty blurry. I kinda want to know how much leeway I might have on things like how Forte can process energy, for example. Would I be restricted to just the specialized energy seen in the games, or can I say that he can charge from electrical outlets or even consume food and process it into energy? Fandom has used these, but it hasn't been canonically confirmed, to my fairly expansive knowledge. (Also, having to rely on specialized energy would kind of screw him over in the setting, so yeah.)

The other biggest issue in this vein, I think, is what he would look like minus helmet. Robots (or Megaman and Protoman/Blues, at least, plus some other robots with hair like Terra) have been shown to have hair under their helmets, but Forte hasn't canonically removed his. You should see the debates on what color it would be alone... I'm likely to go with the closest thing I've got to canon: the hairstyle that two very influential doujinshi artists for the series both chose.

-Robot plus PCD. Would he be able to interact with it in any manner significantly different from your average character? Mostly like, plugging himself into it somehow and using it hands-free, or writing himself a program to allow him to do so. On a related note, would it be possible for him to access the network via his built-in communications systems at all? (Sorry if this bit would be better suited to the PCD FAQ; I figured all my silly questions in one place would probably be easier!)

...I'm just interested in exploring weird things when playing a nonhuman character, don't mind me... and sorry this is so long ahhhhhh ._.

Hello, Modly Mods! :D

I'm planning on apping in Sgt. Major Kururu from Keroro Gunsou.

/watches no one know what I'm talking about T_T

Kururu is an alien supergenius and inventor who pretty much invents some new weapon or gadget every chapter or so. I dearly want him to be able to invent things in Adstring. I think this could work by having him arrive with one of his basic "ray gun" inventions and just having him "retool" it occasionally to do something new or different. I'm pretty sure there won't be any problem with that part.

HOWEVER... Most of his inventions involve altering reality. Say, turning things into candy, changing someone's gender or giving someone the appearance of a child. Would I be able to keep this aspect in Ads? I'd be willing to okay his inventions with the mods as they come up or stick to a pre-arranged list of allowable things (or anything else you guys can think of to keep it from causing a problem). I'm thinking that the "retooling" of his invention could go like the mini-events of The Master hypnotizing people or Yuca releasing his angels - totally opt-in and only effecting a small portion of the overall population.

Part of me thinks this should be totally okay, since we have wizards who can do much of the same things... but then part of me thinks it might be a problem to have a character with the ability to just make whatever he wants whenever he wants to. ARGH. Guidance, please? Please?? T_T

/puppy dog eyes at forever!

I'm just... kdhjsalfkjhfs totally lost here XD

Question!

A friend of mine is interested in apping Ursa from Avatar: The Last Airbender. She doesn't have a whole lot of canon, but she is in a few episodes, and given both distinct personality and motivations when we see what we DO see of her. Given a history of characters like Trisha Elric and Lance from the Pokemon games, do you think that an application for Ursa would be allowed?

[identity profile] adstrngndummod.livejournal.com 2011-07-20 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, Ursa wouldn't be considered app-able. She's really only in one episode on her own, and other than that, is only in dream sequences. There's not quite enough canon for her. I'm sorry. :(
